Planting a Test Plot + Fetching Cows for the Robot | Cow Palace E83
What a great feeling to be this close to finishing up spring planting!
The jobs today: Finish planting the hay crop that's overseeded with sorghum-sudan. Then finish corn planting with a corn silage test plot. And the sprayer arrives to burnout the triticale crop so we can plant soybeans.
Of course we still have a dairy farm to worry about, so we'd better drop into the barn and fetch a fresh heifer who calved a few days ago. This way she'll learn how to use the robot on her own.

The New Air Seeder + Trying this Triticale Cow Feed | Cow Palace E81
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
The chaos of spring is upon us - and what a great spring it is proving to be. Step one: Help Tyler finish planting his soybeans with his new John Deer 1990 Air Seeder. Which is a very big improvement to move from 15' of drilling capacity to 30' with every pass. Step two: Cut the triticale. We're testing out this new feed for the cows in which we can plant it in the fall providing a field with a...
Moving Milk to the Calf Barn | Cow Palace E80
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Год назад
On this episode, Bella gives you a little update on how all the calves are doing and then we go straight into feeding calves. We have had the calf robot for the last few months and really enjoy how everything is working. With the new robot and SmartTank set up it has made calf chores much easier and much faster. Checking the list of cows who are calving soon is always important to make sure the...

Nutritional testing of the feeds we grow is an important step to making sure all the animals are getting the right food every day. After all, just like the foods you eat, everything has different levels of protein, fibre, sugar, etc. But testing, we can then make the right mix of all the ingredients to get the healthiest and most balanced feeds. That's really the job of our herd's nutritionist,...
Brand new water bowl & heifers need sorting | Cow Palace E78

We've got some AMAZING weather in our part of the world. So amazing that the curtains on the barn are wide open letting lots of fresh air in. And while sitting on a patio may feel like a great idea, we've got work to do. One of the calf pens still needs their water bowl hooked up, so let's do that. Then the bigger animals need to be resorted - which is MUCH easier than it was in the old barn. L...
Calf barn is done!! + Manure transfer day | Cow Palace E77

Not only is it exciting to be done the calf barn, but it means we are done construction around the farm! It feels like a very long time since we didn't have a project on the go. So in this video we check out the calf barn and I show you how it works. But before that, we have manure to move from one pit to the other. And believe it or not - not everything goes perfectly. First calf in the new barn + feeding cows carrots | Cow Palace E76

There is a lot of 'new' happening this week. The first, is a new calf in the new calf barn! Not because the barn is completely ready, but because there is no space for little Peanut anywhere else. So she gets the barn to herself! And then we feed the sudan grass we grew in the summer time as well as add a new ingredient to our mix - carrots! Will the cows like the carrots? We sure hope so, beca...
Forget straw - we're using sand for cows to lay on | Cow Palace E75

We tried to be a deep bedded barn, and use straw under the cows in the main barn. But it just didn't work well enough. But have no fear - sand is here! We always had planned the barn for both. Could it do sand and/or straw. It's a good thing we decided on that because we really like the sand now and won't be going back. We still do have a couple of pens to bed with straw, which is why we're usi...

We're back! It's been a very busy fall, but we're finally back and ready to share what's happening around the farm again. In this episode we have to get ready for winter. How we feed cows in the new barn | Cow Palace - Ep73

Chores in our new barn look a lot different than they did in the old barn. Feeding, for instance, has changed a lot, given that most of the herd is now under one roof, instead of being at two different farms. (Remember that time we filled the silo for the last time: ruclips.net/video/_FwJFUj8Xmg/видео.html) We still start around 5am, mixing things for the dry cows, heifers and then the milk cow...
DEMOLISHING the OLD Barn! | Cow Palace - Ep72

Talk about the end of an era. A barn that has milked a lot of cows since Grandpa bought the farm in the late fifties, and been standing here since 1880, has come down. It was always part of the grand expansion plan. After all, the old structure was facing some big repairs, and the challenge we run into with today's large equipment that just won't fit inside the low ceilings. So down it comes. B...

.....so: there is nothing sensible for us, I think! These are all outdated stable systems. I have in mind a system that is not technical - that attracts a cow, a sheep or a goat - with food into a kind of bay. Then the teats are cleaned with a pulsating water sprayer, massaged - and then the milking device is attached and milked. not more. Clearly there should be animal identification - via transponder - and there should be a contactless inspection of the respective animal - also an internal examination of the milked milk, which should be processed immediately on site into hard cheese. The problem: the animals have no connection to humans - they run around freely. And they look for the protected areas of their own accord and can stay there when it rains or have themselves milked. The associated problem: there are terraces with trees and plants - kind of mountains! I think that what I want and know exactly how it should look and function doesn't exist! I'm watching the film here - opening the cabinets is like a journey into a world that is long outdated: today we transmit electrical current and also control data, determined data - via light, laser. All the old technology makes what is shown in the film very complicated and expensive! and complex, time-consuming! and I think: inefficient! You can't monitor and control animals that run around freely by putting them in the stable and planning feeding times and milking times too! As with all animals: they know what is good for them - when kept in stables, underfeeding is generally the norm - but overfeeding would be right! An animal must be able to eat whenever it wants to eat - and drink as well! I'll keep looking: there will be some people who don't stick to the old ways - admittedly, that's what makes them money - but there also has to be something that's quick, easy and safe! I think just to be on the safe side: I'll have to design it myself! Then all the effort spent searching would just be a waste of time! thank you for your information! Kind regards from Berlin, Germany

3 times milking makes the milk inferior for cheesemaking eg. Like in switzerland a farmer was excluded from the gruyere aop. And other regions think about stopping robotic milking for their cheese makers. It means max. 2 times milking per day. Just some info

With all respect, the M²erlin of JOZ Fullwood with the Fullsense herdmanagement software is momentarily the best robot on the market. It does not matter which robot you decide to purchase, keep in mind, once a robot is installed, you have fixed costs. The most expensive robot in regards to energy, so including electricity, water usage, detergent, dippspray and....the amount of foremilk from 5 to 1 (so from worse to the best) is: GEA, then DeLaval, then Boumatic, then Lely and the cheapest of all is the M²erlin from JOZ FULLWOOD ☝️☝️!! The DLG, Deutsche Land Gesellschaft in Germany tested them all. All robots are using far over 14000 kwH per year, only the M²erlin uses a mere 8500 kwH on electricity per robot per year. Make no mistake, the costs of all robots are not to underestimate. So, before you decide to with robots, do the comparison check! Over a lifetime of say 12 years, you be surprised how much you pay per liter milk, per cow or per robot on fixed costs!! Again, they all milk but everytime I talk to M²erlin users, they all say, we have barely any problems with our robots, they run and run and run and do where they are made for, to produce lots of milk without any headaches. In Europe we have several M²erlin users which produce 1.9 to 2 million lbs per robot/year!! As I am a lot on the road and worked with all different robot manufacturers all I can say, not ever I met a red, a blue, a green or blue/orange robot who made it over the 1.7 million lbs/year. So next time, if you compare robots again, take a M²erlin into your test. You'll be surprised!
